On Monday, September 29th, from 6-8pm at the Church of One Tree (492 Sonoma Ave), the Santa Rosa Open Government Task Force is having a Public Forum on their recently-released recommendations to open up our city's public meeting and citizen engagement processes. The City website contains two Subcommittee reports, and links to them are included below.
Recommendations from the Community Engagement SubCommittee (Rabbi George Gittleman, Dee Dee Bridges, Karen Weeks, and Peter Stanley)
Recommendation from the Policy SubCommittee (Ashle Crocker, Bruce Kyse, Tony Alvernaz, Shirleen DeRezendes-Claiche)
The timing of this meeting fortunately occurs a few days after the City is co-sponsoring (with Santa Rosa Together) the first in a Speaker Series featuring Matt Leighninger, Executive Director of Deliberative Democracy Consortium, and author of the book, The Next Form of Democracy, which traces the recent shifts in the relationship between citizens and government, and examines how these trends are reshaping politics. Being held in the City Council Chambers at Noon on Thursday, September 25th, it will also be broadcast on the city's live webcasting system (Council Meeting Archive).
The presentation is entitled "The Next Form of Democracy - How citizens and local government are building new partnerships and moving beyond adversity". I'm looking forward to both these public forums, and I will report back in this blog on the activities and decisions which move this agenda forward in our city.
